The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information emerged.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I invite you to fight with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."

Bolsonaro is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on the following day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other health problems.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

Top judicial officials said that he was aware of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The magistrates found that the rioters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.

At the period, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
