Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of characters, and a exciting storyline featuring divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences increasing in power within the urban setting.

Warning: Revealing details for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Combat-Oriented Party Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of heroes who will split off from the main group to begin their independent quest, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group features the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam Riegel), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was obvious from the beginning that having everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Prelude, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Warriors, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

Per Brennan Lee Mulligan, the warrior group is for adventurers who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where non-violent answers are few and far between.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might look out of place, but the events of episode 3 make it clear why these particular heroes are best suited for the Soldiers table.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a violent first encounter with the enemy group.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose passing initiated the campaign’s events—manipulated the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting Thimble, and taking all the powerful objects to sell off.

Casimir then paid off his debts and fled to a secure base in the remote area, beyond the urban center, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the companion and best friend, desires revenge.
  • Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a hostile place.
  • The warrior and The healer, having resisted his family’s wishes to eliminate the fighter and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • However, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could assist the group enter locations they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to The cleric for his salvation and will now follow him wherever.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that control the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • Thimble and The character are notorious outlaws.
  • The strong figure and Wicander turned against the powerful family and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is marked for death by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to head to the northern region in pursuit of the traitor.

What’s Next?

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around the following episode, leaving the remaining eight cast members to form the Questers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can anticipate discovering which characters will be assigned to which table in the season’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
